Regeneration to Bring the Wonder Back to Earls Court

It’s known for its former exhibition centre and a busy Tube interchange, but plans are afoot to bring the wonder back to Earls Court by breathing new life into this west London area.

The Earls Court Development Company (ECDC), a partnership of TfL and investment company Delancey, will lead the regeneration of the 40-acre site, which it describes as one of London’s most exciting and important development opportunities. The project will bring a combination of new homes and commercial opportunities alongside green and cultural spaces.

According to the ECDC its “bold and ambitious vision” will “bring the wonder back to Earls Court”, with a masterplan that “opens up the site to the local community, celebrates the legacy of world-class ingenuity, creates a better piece of city, and responds to the climate emergency”.

The company says the plans follow “thousands” of conversations with residents and businesses about the future of the site. Over the coming months, more detailed plans will be shared at live and virtual events, as well as drop-ins at stations and markets.

Parts of the project already delivered include the refurbishment of derelict properties at Empress Place, which were offered to key workers during the. first national lockdown. Six derelict Victorian townhouses have been converted into Empress Studios – 8,500 square feet of creative workspaces, providing affordable units for arts and science enterprises.

Other initiatives include a new community hub, a £180,000-a-year Earls Court Community Fund to award grants to local organisations and use of the site for events as part of the Underbelly festival. There are also plans to use an empty building, the Mannequin Factory, as an immersive theatre space.
