Step into history at Marble Arch

If you’re curious about the history of Marble Arch, a series of free character-led tours will take you to the heart of this fascinating central London area.

Organised by Marble Arch Business Improvement District (BID) and Westminster City Council, the walks are led by celebrated 18th century architect John Nash, the man behind the Arch, Buckingham Palace and many iconic Regency buildings.

People taking part will find out about Grade II-listed Marble Arch and its association with royal processions, free speech and protest. You will also visit the site of the infamous gallows, Tyburn tree, and stop at Speakers’ Corner to learn how passionate speeches delivered on the spot helped shape British history. The walks take place as preparations are being made by English Heritage to restore Marble Arch.

The tours will run from 18 July to 19 August and are part of the council’s Inside Out programme of outdoor performances, exhibitions, sculpture trails and activities across the borough.

The walks begin at the Marble Arch monument and last one hour. Special walks on 2 and 9 August at 10.30am, are step-free and shorter for people with reduced mobility.

Kay Buxton, chief executive, Marble Arch London BID said: “We are excited to be partnering with Westminster City Council to launch a series of immersive, character-led tours across this historic part of London over the summer holiday period. Discover Marble Arch will offer visitors – young and old – a memorable visit to London and will take in multiple sites where they can learn about the roles these sites have played in British history.”
