Public parks are the lifeblood of large urban cities like London. Where would we be without them?

We’re happy to say that one of the capital’s most celebrated green spaces, the Grade I-listed Hyde Park, is right on our doorstep.

We’ve certainly written on this blog about Hyde Park before, but we’ve yet to provide a guide to the park: what there is to see, do, and experience. So here goes…

What to do

• Swim in the Serpentine Lake – the Serpentine Swimming Club is the oldest club of its kind in the UK, and the lake has been a popular swimming spot for years. For a small fee, you can swim in the Serpentine Lido. It is open to the public every day throughout June, July and August, and on weekends during May.
• Go boating on the Serpentine Lake – you can hire a boat between the months of April to the end of October. Hyde Park boast the UK’s first solarshuttle, which holds up to 40 passengers, and you can hire a pedal or rowing boat, which can accommodate up to six people.
• Dip your toes in the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain – first opened in 2004, this watery memorial to Diana is a pleasing addition to Hyde Park. The fountain’s water is refreshed regularly and is taken from the city’s water table.
• Grab a drink and a bit to eat at The Lido Café and Bar – on a sunny afternoon, there’s no better place to be than beside the Serpentine at an alfresco bar and café. It’s a great place for families with young children to congregate (there is a baby changing unit onsite) and for those who want to enjoy a cold beer with friends or sip a morning coffee and simply watch the world go by.
• Pick up a racquet and play – there are multiple tennis courts available for hire, as well as a bowling green and putting course.

What to see

• The roses in the Rose Garden – the best time to view the roses is in early Summer, but there is always something to see at any time of the year. The garden also features a pergola and two fountains, once of which is a statue of Diana the Huntress.
• The towering Albert Memorial – commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her husband Prince Albert, the Albert Memorial is hard to miss. Designed in the gothic revival style, it is gleaming, ornate, and beautifully-crafted.
• Wildlife – Hyde Park is a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna. Look out for exotic-looking birds near the Serpentine and ‘minibeasts’ in the meadow.
• Art in the Serpentine Galleries – the Serpentine Galleries comprise two contemporary art galleries in Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park. It’s always worthwhile to steal a glimpse at the latest exhibitions.

What to experience

• Hear an impromptu speech at Speakers’ Corner – this area of the park has long been used as a site for speeches and public debates, and this tradition continues to this day.
• Catch an event – Hyde Park hosts a lot of events throughout the year. British Summer Time Hyde Park is one of the biggest annual events, drawing huge crowds. The line-up at this year’s British Summer Time included the likes of Eric Clapton, The Cure, Roger Waters, and Paul Simon. Meanwhile, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is one of the most popular events of its kind in the UK, and there are a wide range of smaller events throughout the year, from craft workshops to ‘discovery days’ to walking tours.
