Gold medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden springs up near Marble Arch

The Wild West End Garden, a gold medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden, has been recreated at a site close to Marble Arch. Designed to improve air quality and provide a sanctuary for residents and West End visitors, the garden is a green oasis in central London.

A gold medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden has recently sprung up in a street close to Marble Arch.

The Wild West End Garden, created by award-winning garden designer Kate Gould, was first showcased at the world-famous flower show in May this year and won gold in the ‘Spaces to Grow’ category.

Now the garden has been transplanted to a site on Old Quebec Street, only a stone’s throw from Marble Arch.

The garden, which sits in an area of central London known for its high levels of air pollution, features a variety of plants known for their ability to improve air quality.

The layout of the garden echoes the layout of a London square, and the garden is intended to provide residents, shoppers, workers, and visitors with a tranquil oasis away from the business of Oxford Street.

The Wild West End Garden was officially opened on Monday 25th June by the New West End Company, and the project has been realised in partnership with the New West End Company, The Portman Estate, the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, a London-based charity, and Wild West End.

A key aim of the garden is to provide a natural habitat for birds and wildlife, while creating more green space for people to enjoy.

Strategic Projects Director of The Portman Estate, Simon Loomes, said: “For us it is a first step which, if successful, will see the creation of a number of more permanent pocket parks across the district. Our estate sits between Regent’s Park and Hyde Park and these new sites will help create ecological corridors allowing wildlife to migrate and benefit from a wider green network.”

The Wild West End Garden is a communal garden and is free for all to visit – the ideal antidote to a busy day of shopping in the West End.
