Blue Plaque to Princess Diana Unveiled at Her Earl’s Court Flat

An Earl’s Court flat, which was the residence of Princess Diana before her marriage to Prince Charles, has been recognised with an English Heritage blue plaque.

The story of the princess is currently very much in the spotlight, thanks to the latest series of the Netflix royal drama The Crown, and the forthcoming musical based on her life starring Kristen Stewart. The plaque acknowledges the extraordinary historical importance of Diana – and the flat, which for a time became one of the most famous addresses in Britain.

The princess is also commemorated for her role in raising awareness of social issues including homelessness, HIV/AIDS and mental health.

The three-bedroom flat was given to Diana on her 18th birthday by her parents in the late 1970s during the carefree period when she was working as a nursery assistant, before her engagement to the Prince of Wales.

At that time the flat was bought for £50,000 – current Zoopla estimates price it at around £2.41 million.

The plaque is part of a move by English Heritage to commemorate more women, following accusations that the scheme mostly celebrates white men – 86% of London’s existing blue plaque recipients are male.

Other notable women, including social reformer Caroline Norton, abolitionist, Ellen Craft and QC Helene Normaton are commemorated with new plaques.

Recent crops of plaques have also sought to pay tribute to Black and minority ethnic London residents, including Bob Marley, wartime secret agent Noor Inayat Khan and abolitionist Ottobah Cugoano.
