London is home to some of the world’s best universities, with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Imperial College placed among the UKs top five institutions by the Complete University Guide. The Times Education Supplement also places Imperial College within its 10 top universities worldwide.
What’s more, the capital is frequently cited as being one of the best places to be a student, worldwide. It’s no surprise then, that London University’s institutions attract a considerable number of applicants – not just from across the UK but from around the globe. More than 100,000 international students from 210 nations are enrolled at a university in London, giving anyone who studies here the opportunity to build an amazing global network of contacts.
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) coordinates applications to UK institutions. The UCAS deadline for applying for a place at most UK universities, starting September 2020, is 15 January 2020. The Complete University Guide’s London league table is an authoritative study which uses entry standards, student satisfaction, research quality and graduate prospects as factors that decide a university’s overall ranking.
Its current top 10 London ranking goes like this:
1. LSE – based off the Kingsway in central London, the LSE is one of the foremost social science universities in the world.
2. Imperial College London – close to the museums district of South Kensington, this world-class institution has a focus on science, engineering, medicine and business.
3. UCL – strong on research, this Bloomsbury university is recognised for its academic excellence and global impact.
4. King’s College London – with its main campus on The Strand, King’s is a prestigious establishment, famed for its research with faculties including medicine, dentistry, arts and humanities and law.
5. Queen Mary University of London is to be found in London’s vibrant East End and is committed to high-quality teaching and research.
6. SOAS University of London is Europe’s leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. It is based in Bloomsbury.
7. Brunel University of London was founded in 1966 in Uxbridge, west London and specialises in innovation and research.
8. St George’s University of London is a medical school in Tooting, south London with a history dating back to 1733.
9. Goldsmiths University of London is a south-east London institution, specialising in the study of creative, cultural and social subjects.
10. City University of London is committed to academic excellence, focused on business and the professions.
