New research from the property portal Rightmove reveals the priorities of today’s homebuyers and renters.

Top of the list for would-be buyers is a doer-upper – a property they can make their mark on and potentially secure for a bargain price. Renters, meanwhile, are looking for a home kitted out with smart tech that could keep their bills low, according to the study.
To find out what matters most to people moving home, the website scoured more than 600,000 property listings and analysed the features that led to the highest number of estate agent enquiries.
According to Rightmove, first-time buyers, with limited budgets, and investors are most drawn to fixer-uppers which are around 8% cheaper than the average property.
Next on the wish list are new boilers, followed by the loft conversions, storage space and cellars that offer sought-after living room. Chain free properties were eighth on the list.
When it comes to renters, measures that could keep energy bills low were in high demand. Double glazing came first, followed by smart tech – including a smart heating system. A new boiler came in at number six.
Traditional wish-list features such having a station nearby and access to parking were at number two and three respectively.
According to Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s property expert: “This new study could help sellers and landlords when they’re thinking about the different features to highlight on their property listing. It may not seem important to mention that a property has storage space or a new boiler, but our study shows this could make a difference when prospective buyers and renters are deciding which homes to go and view.”
