Landlords will find it easier to evict nuisance tenants under a new anti-social behaviour action plan announced by the government.

The plan, launched by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, includes a new property ombudsman and a two-week notice period for tenants evicted as a result of anti-social behaviour.
The proposals are part of a raft of measures to tackle anti-social behaviour, which go beyond the housing sector, with tougher penalties for graffiti and fly-tipping.
According to the government: “Landlords must be able to act against persistently problematic tenants and relieve innocent parties living nearby. Through this action plan we are strengthening the system – changing laws and arming landlords with the tools to ensure that anti-social tenants face the consequences of their actions.”
The move would make it easier and quicker for landlords to evict anti-social tenants by adding clauses to tenancy agreements which prohibit disruptive behaviour.
The new two weeks’ notice period, for evicting such tenants, would replace the current two months. In addition, landlords would not need to wait until the end of a lease term to take eviction proceedings in these circumstances.
The government says it will also work with the courts to speed up the eviction process, while making efforts to promote the existing tools for tackling anti-social behaviour to landlords.
Ben Beadle, chief executive of the National Residential Landlords Association, said: “Anti-social tenants blight the lives of fellow renters and their neighbours.”
He added: “Whilst we will study the detail of the government’s plans carefully, we welcome its commitment to strengthen the ability of landlords to evict unruly tenants.”
